Wingecarribee Shire Council  organised their Environment Day Fair for May 23 2008.  A number of school groups attended and amongst the other excellent stands IMBY had a stand to talk about food fairness and food miles.  We also gave every student a packet of pocket money beans to grow for Spring 2008.

Food fairness is an interesting topic.  Using 8 images from the wonderful book "what is eaten around the world in a week" we asked the students to vote on which country's food was nicest, which was healthiest and which was fairest.  Nicest and healthiest were easy. but fairest was a new concept.  It allowed us to introduce the ecological footprint of various lifestyles, with the American diet requiring 4 earths, and Egypt being one.  Australia is over 3, which surprised many.

Food miles was demonstrated by comparing the journey of some home grown borlotti beans to a tin of Italian borlotti beans.  We had one student as the home gardener, compared to the Italian farmer with all the trucks, factories, warehouses, ships and shops in between.

Finally, we asked if students knew how to grow money.  The pocket money bean idea was explained and then each student was given a packet of beans (kindly provided by Yates for an earlier project).
