In My BackYard is a light hearted project but there is a serious underlying philosophy. For the first time in our known history, an organism (that's us!) has the opportunity to become self-limiting using intelligence rather than biology. Until now, biology has imposed the limitations on organisms. An organism will continue to breed itself until other factors limit its growth. But our intelligence has broken the brake! With our intelligence we can manipulate biological processes and now appear to be on a runaway path to damaging the entire ecosystem. The challenge for our civilisation is to use our intelligence self-limit our growth. Yes, it's hard because it goes against our biological urge to expand. If you see any palatable or workable alternatives let me know. I happen to love our intelligence, our culture, our complex interactions and don't want to "go back" to a demon haunted world. I firmly believe each of us who is capable should make the choice to protect and cherish life. Growing vegetables in the backyard is a small action that all of us can take to help reduce our load on our fragile planet. |
