Download the report here (it is a 600kb PDF): files/water less garden trial final report May 2006 - low res.pdf The watering test was IMBY's first piece of backyard science. The project scope was:
The study was conducted at the Resource Recovery Centre (RRC) in Moss Vale. The RRC is the waste management facility of the Wingecarribee Shire Council and is a proud supporter of sustainability (and an example in itself of a sustainable waste management centre). Two small gardens were established, with identical layouts and crops. One was drip irrigated, the other watered via an overhead sprinkler. The water consumption was measured using two water meters. The water was delivered via timers. The overhead sprinkler delivered 30 minutes per 12 hour period and the drip irrigator 90 minutes per day. A rain gauge measured ambient rain. Similar growth and vigour of the plants indicate a valid comparison of water use. The water will be manipulated to manage this as the control. The study was been assisted by Hardie Pope (Toro Australia), who kindly donated most of the watering hardware and the RRC who are hosting the trial and have donated the garden bedding material and the water. The infrastructure for the trial was installed late October. The watering system was installed November and metering began 19th November. The trial ran from October 2005 to April 2006. See the "Photos" page for a pictorial history and the "Results" page for the meter results. The meter readings were done weekly.
